Two cadres of the banned People's Revolutionary Party for Kangleipak (PREPAK)'s Shanti group and their five accomplices were arrested from Jadavpur's Bapujinagar area early on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off from military intelligence, a team from Jadavpur police station raided the flat where they had put up and picked up the seven. The flat's owner Kartik Chakraborty has also been detained. This is the second time that the presence of PREPAK activists has been detected in the southern fringes of the city.

Among those picked up by police are 27-year-old Maisnam German Singh, a self-styled sergeant major and a key co-ordinator of PREPAK’s activities in Kolkata, and Maksha Terbam Gunindo Singh, said Eastern Command CPRO RK Das. Military intelligence sources added that German had been on the run since the last raids were carried out nearly eight months ago near Bapujinagar.

It is suspected that German was involved in financial dealings. The others were identified as Sonamani Sarma, K Suresh Singh, K Gita Devi, Rita Devi and Rajita Devi. The Manipur-based terror outfit is active in urban areas.

The seven, masquerading as Jadavpur University students, rented the flat a couple of years ago. With many students from the North-East staying at Bapujinagar and other areas of Jadavpur, no one suspected that any of them could be linked to any terror organization.

Three months ago, they had gone to Manipur, but returned recently. Military intelligence had been on the alert since their return. Around 4.30 am, police received the message with the location of the PREPAK members. All the seven were at the flat when the police team reached. Several CDs, notebooks, documents and a video camera have been seized from the flat.

"They are suspected members of PREPAK. We haven't found any arms and ammunition but other things have been seized," said South 24-Parganas SP Praveen Kumar.
